Turtle has a very significance meaning to the native people. The Ojibway people have a creation story that talks about how Turtle Island came to be. Pictographs tell our stories. When the vision of a turtle shape shaker came to me I could see the creation story painted on the turtle. I honored this vision by making that shaker. Giving thanks to the turtle for bring us to this land we know as Turtle Island. On the shell of this turtle shaker the people are sitting on the back of a giant turtle approaching Turtle Island. A wigwam (lodge/home) awaits the arrival of the people this is how the Ojibwa people built their homes long ago. The underside of the turtle has a design of flowers commonly used by the Ojibwa people.
Many nations have different teaching of the turtle this is what I have learned. I hope you enjoy!  Miigwech S. Oz.
