Hello. My name is Lisa Morrisseau. I am from Keewaywin First Nation. I was born
in Cochenour, Ontario on November 20, 1968 to Norval and Harriet Morrisseau
(Kakegamic).I have 5 brothers and
1sister.I come from a family of
artists, four out of five brothers also paint, and their names are David,
Pierre, Eugene, and Christian.My two
nephew’s Kyle Morrisseau and Joshim Kakegamic (Christian’s sons) are the next
generation of Morrisseau artists.I am
so proud of them.
This gift was passed down from our
late father Norval, Artist, Grand Shaman of the Ojibwas. After the death of our father, on December 4,
2007, I decided I wanted to pursue my own artistic talents.A lot of my of my inspiration came from my
father, my brothers, and my late beloved Uncle Joshim Kakegamic. I still miss
him terribly to this day.
I
have a lot of fond and crazy memories of my father when I was a child, even
when I was a baby crawling around.This
really surprises my sister Victoria because she would say, how could you
remember that? you were just a baby. Especially the times seeing him paint in
the nude (ha-ha), or dancing around wearing his native masks. It scared me at first, but I got use to
it.I remember when my parents
separated, it hurt me so much.I felt
the pain even as a baby.I use love
watching him paint, I would be oohing and aahing in my baby talk.
I smudge in his memory and
give him thanks for his assistance in seeing and painting my images on
canvas.As I paint, I feel his presence
and sometimes I feel someone touching my hand as I paint. It brings me tears of joy, knowing it’s my
father guiding my brush.I’d say “hello
father, nice of you to be here with me”.
I am hoping to please the
masses with my artwork.I am getting
rave reviews from my friends from all over the world.Friends from Italy, England, Egypt India, and
Australia have asked me to come and so art exhibitions in their countries. This is something that I would love to do in
the near future.
Thank you all.I am so proud to be referred as the Shaman’s
Daughter. It is truly an honor. My first artworks has been displayed and
sold through “Up in Frames” in Toronto (Oct. 08).
