Joshim M. Kakegamic

Joshim M. Kakegamic was born on January 9, 1994. He Joshim is from Keewaywin First Nation, a fly-in community Northwest of Thunder Bay. Joshim is the grandson of renowned Woodland artist Norval Morrisseau and the second oldest son of Christian Morrisseau.  He is also the younger brother of Kyle Morrisseau.

Joshim was named after his father’s uncle Joshim Kakegamic, Born in 1952 in Sandy Lake, Joshim Kakegamic and his brothers Goyce and Henry started the Triple K Co-operative, a silkscreen operation based in Red Lake.  By 1975 Kakegamic was being shown at Aggregation Gallery in Toronto, which still handled Carl Ray’s work.  While Kakegamic’s predecessors invented and refined the pictographic style, Joshim Kakegamic was weaned on it, and rapidly perfected the vocabulary.  He was a painter of technical virtuosity and an innovator in the field of Indian print production.  Joshim Kakegamic died tragically in December 27, 1993 while on a rescue mission.  Joshim was born the day they recovered Joshim Kakegamic after a two week search.

“I started painting in January 2008 after the passing of my grandfather; in 2002 I sat with my father and grandfather in Keewaywin and Thunder Bay and did my first painting
with them. My grandfather sketched the image and I painted the backgrounds and my father did the lines.

I feel proud to help keep the Morrisseau family traditions and stories alive. I have had 3 art shows with my father and one with my Grandfather Norval Morrisseau works.”

Joshim is a grade 9 student, attending high school in Thunder Bay.
