Jeremy Kakepetum is a Sandy Lake First Nation band member who was born
in Sioux Lookout, Ontario in 1980. He lived in Keewaywin First Nation for a
short period of time in his youth and eventually moved to Sandy Lake along with
his entire family. Jeremy has also lived in Thunder Bay, Grassy Narrows,
Ontario and Winnipeg Manitoba, Manitoba
Jeremy’s talent came from watching and painting with his father Wally
Kakepetum during his youth.
“I remember when I would sit at the table watching my dad paint and at
times he would tell me not to move the table. Now I find myself telling my
children not to move the table!”
“My dad used to draw an outline of an animal for me and I would paint
it.”
“I also remember when I was in school and art class would roll around,
most of my class mates would be huddled around my desk watching me draw or
paint and they would ask me to do it for them too.”
Regrettably, Jeremy began to go through a stage of rebellion and decided
to take up art as a form of expression. His father Wally Kakepetum and brother Shaun Kakepetum used to paint as
well.
“It has been years since Jeremy painted and is looking forward to a career
in art.
Jeremy started
contemplating with the idea of painting again in 2008 and eventually acted upon
it in 2009 while he was visiting in Thunder Bay. His inspiration comes from his
friend Ron Disbrowe, a Canadian artist from Red Sucker Lake, Manitoba who
currently resides in Thompson, Manitoba. Although Jeremy’s father laid in the
foundation of painting, he is mainly a self-taught artist.
