Helen Kalvak 1901 - 1984
Helen was a Copper Inuit graphic artist from Northwest Territories, Canada. In 1960 Kalvak moved to Holman were she helped a Roman Catholic priest set up the Holman Eskimo Co-op and began her artwork In 1965 her art work as turned into prints and sold throughout the world. Ten years later, in recognition of her work, Kalvak was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and in 1978 appointed to the Order of Canada. Shortly after Canada Post used her work entitled "The Dance" for the 17 cent postage stamp. The school in Holman is named after her.
