Saul Mamakeesick

Saul Mamakeesick was born on the Sandy Lake Indian Reserve in the summer of 1957.

At a very early age, Mamakeesick (meaning "mother of the sky"), listened to his father recount stories about nature and the creation of life. These stories had a significant influence on Mamakeesick's life.

His first reaction to these stories was to begin writing poetry about nature. Afterwards, he began to transfer his creative imagination to canvas and began producing "living art".   He was thus able to share his feelings about life both in poetry and art.
Mamakeesick feels that nature provides a force which guides the hand to paint..."like Nature which fills the human soul with joy..."
Mamakeesick's poetry best expresses his vision: "...art becomes a reality to each person who is faithful and conquers its hindrances...."

"I look at other artists' paintings
feeling no critical spirit
Accepting what they had put to life
Reaching their goal through
depression and frustration
Trying to show that art has ways of
giving in to people who obey." - Saul Mamakeesick
