Leland Bell

LELAND BELL

Leland Bell was born in 1953 at Wikwemikong, Manitoulin Island, Ontario. He was raised there and in Toronto. He graduated from Laurentian University in Sudbury where he majored in Native Studies.

An Ojibwa Odawa, Bell prefers to identify himself as an Anishinabe, an Ojibwa word for the North America, meaning literally from where man was lowered.

Leland began painting professionally in 1976 and in addition to his art devotes much of his energy to creative writing and music. In the latter part of 1999 he was collaborating with Blake Debassige and Shirley Chee Choo on writing music for one of Shirley's film projects.
