In a distant time the Iroquois League was made up of six different tribes who were fighting against each other. The Peacemaker arrived and united the nations which formed the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy.
To emphasize the union, the Peacemaker uprooted a White Pine and asked the people to throw their weapons of war into the hole where strong currents of water carried them away (Thus came the expressions "Bury the Hatchet"). The tree was replanted and is referred to the Great Tree of Peace. It has four White Roots of Peace which reach north, each, south and west to the ends of Turtle Island. They are a symbolic invitation to all peoples to accept peace. An eagle was placed at the top of the tree to see far into the distance and warn of approaching danger.
