Jackie Traverse
Jackie Traverse is a recent graduate from the school of fine arts at the University of Manitoba. She is an Anishinabe from Lake St. Martin First Nation. Jackie works in all mediums from sculpture, mixed media, painting and video.
Jackie Traverse is already widely known in art communities across Canada. Her paintings, drawings, documentaries, and sculptures speak to realities of being an Aboriginal woman. She has created stop-motion animation on missing and murdered women in Canada, and another on the sixties scoop titled "Two Scoops" and her latest stop motion animation "Empty' is a tribute to her estranged mother. Jackie is deeply moved by the injustices faced by First Nations people.
Through her art she expresses her ideas and opinions while striving to inspire dialogue on addressing her people’s social issues.
To Jackie painting is truly where her heart lies. Her happiest moments are when she is painting.
Jackie is known at the National and International level as an amazingly gifted artist who is dedicated to giving back to her people in as many capacities as possible.
Her most recent accomplishment has jettisoned her into another unique spotlight, this time involving the Olympics of 2010. Her project that involves Coca Cola was unveiled regionally and across the country throughout the Vancouver 2010 Torch Relay and finally on to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games.
Jackie is delighted with all the positive recognition which she hopes will highlight her social and political agendas. Jackie's life experiences have been the true inspiration for her art.
She wants her achievements to be the inspiration for others to pursue their own dreams. She is a believer in the power of education, lifelong learning, and the forthrightness of sharing her personal experiences.
Her tenacity can be experienced through her messages of hope, community involvement, and the courage to take positive risks, while remaining true to her identities as indigenous people and celebrating it all the while.
